Some of you have noticed that the grand entrance steps of Sunset High School have been partially demolished, and the unique decorative features removed. This has created a lot of dismay, especially among Sunset alumni.
DISD School Board Trustee Eric Cowan put in calls over the weekend to find out what is happening. Here is his reply from this morning:
"As part of the bond project to repair the stairs, it was determined there were significant structural issues and deterioration of the ceiling structure below the stairs making it unsafe. The project will now rebuild all the area, waterproof the underside support, and restore the steps.
"They also said they plan to rebuild the stairway to the original look. They are having the decorative features sandblasted, restored, and reinstalled as per the orginal construction."
Mr. Cowan promised to monitor the project's progress.
